Great Strength
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Philippians 4:13
Have you ever been afraid of doing something? Perhaps you were afraid of going to a new place or job, a terrible storm, or maybe just telling someone about Jesus. It would be good to understand that when Christians walk with God in the ways the Bible teaches, God will be with us. We should not be afraid of anything.
God can do anything. We can remember many people from the Bible that learned something important – when God said to do something; He also helped them to do it.
God was with His people and fought battles for them, as long as they obeyed His words and sought His direction. When there was sin in the camp, they lost the battle. When they made an alliance with the enemy without seeking God’s counsel, they sometimes had to fight an extra battle. Worse yet, they sometimes lost the battle because they had not relied upon God.
Is there anything too hard for God to do? “Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee” (Jeremiah 32:17). There is nothing too difficult for God!
God will not ask you to do anything that He will not prepare you to do. Remember what the angel told Mary, the mother of Jesus: “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37).
Joshua proved this in his life as he led the children of Israel to conquer the Promised Land.
Esther demonstrated this when she placed her life in the king’s hand while asking for the lives of her people.
Stephen was able to preach to the religious leaders, and then face death.
Paul was able to survive a shipwreck by trusting and obeying God’s Word.
There are countless examples found in the Bible, and even in history, of people who trusted God with their lives. They walked with Him and lived faithful lives pleasing to God.
King David recorded the following verses, and as one reads about King Hezekiah, one can understand that he believed (and lived) by these encouraging words. “18. The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. 19. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them. 20. The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy” (Psalm 145:18-20).
Read the following verses to understand why we are to trust God in all things: “… for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me” (Hebrews 13:5b-6).
As we learn about these great followers of God, we can understand that God will do the same for Christians today. “Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you” (Philippians 4:9). God still expects Christians to obey His Word today and seek His counsel as we live our lives. This ensures that we will walk in God’s way. There are even times when we know not to be afraid, yet we just become tired. Tired of always choosing to do what is right. Weary of standing against the general consensus of the day when it opposes God and His people. Read what we are to remember: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).
We are to remember that when we obey God in what He wants us to do, He will be with us and will help us. There is nothing of which to be afraid for God will be our strength. This is an encouragement never to be afraid or too tired to continue. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). When God wants a Christian to do something, we can know that God will help us, too – just as he has helped His people throughout the ages. We are to learn to walk with Him, just as the many people of whom we learn about in the Bible.
Do you remember to ask for strength to live according to what God’s Word says?
